What it is like to live in Fort Pierce

Fort Pierce is one of the oldest cities on the Treasure Coast, with a historic downtown on the Indian River Lagoon.

It is the county seat of St. Lucie County and sits right on the Fort Pierce Inlet, so boating, fishing and the beaches on Hutchinson Island are part of everyday life. Compared with much of Port St. Lucie, you will find a wider mix of home styles and ages, from 1920s bungalows and mid-century homes to beachside condos and newer construction on the west side.

What people love

  • A wide range of prices and home styles

Buying smart

Tips for buying in Fort Pierce

  • Price the insurance first. Older homes may need a 4-point inspection, and homes near the water may need flood coverage. See my insurance guide for buyers.
  • Know the building. For beachside condos, review reserves, inspections and assessments. See my condo buying guide.
  • Check city vs. county. Some Fort Pierce addresses are inside city limits and some are unincorporated St. Lucie County, which can affect taxes and services.
